Want to know what the Bible says about fasting?

"Biblical Fasting?  What is it?  Why do we do it?  Citizens of the 21st century (usually) do not think about fasting within Christianity, but the Bible has some pretty clear teachings on the matter.  Whether it be for repentance, unity, helping and blessing others, or actively calling out to God, fasting is a called for act in the Christian life.  Now that the bridegroom Jesus is no longer with us, it is time for action (Matthew 9:15, Matthew 28:19-20).

Fasting is one of the best ways to put Spirit over body (2 Corinthians 4:16).  Throughout our lives we will always find the body and Spirit struggling, but by fasting we tell the body that it is not our master - the Holy Spirit is.  As an added benefit, the time normally spent indulging our taste buds can now be spent in prayer.  Though we may spend a lunch break praying and fasting alone (Matthew 6:5-6), we also strengthen our bond with our fellow believers by strengthening our bond with Christ, for all believers are one in Christ through the Holy Spirit (Galatians 3:28, 1 Corinthians 12:13).  Esther even called for all Jews to unite and fast on her behalf (Esther 4:16)!

In short, Isaiah summarizes what this mission is all about: "Is not this the kind of fasting that I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke?  Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter - when you see the naked, to clothe him, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?" (Isaiah 58:6-7)"
